Can shoppers look forward for better amenities and an environment free from waste, litter and stench at the SGPDA’s markets -- Goa’s lone wholesale fish market and the mega retail fish, vegetable, fruit and meat markets, in the New Year?
Well, a visit to the two mega markets on Sunday showed that construction of the phase-I of the new wholesale fish market is nearing completion. Thanks to the High Court intervention, the authorities, SGPDA, MMC and the police seemed finally coordinating to address the issues plaguing the market, including waste, stench, besides traffic.
The retail market, however, is still craving for attention from the PDA as well as the government in getting the market rid of waste, stench and foul odour, with shoppers hoping for early intervention by the High Court to bring about an early turn around in the market in the New year. A report.
Wholesale fish market: High Court’s intervention seemed to have finally got the authorities, including the SGDPA and the Margao Municipal Council to put in place waste management system inside the market and outside. Unlike the past, the PDA, MMC and the traffic police seemed working in tandem to put the situation in order inside the market and outside, though much needs to be done in getting the road side cleared of the illegal vendors.
The biggest challenge, however, for the SGPDA is the completion of the modern wholesale fish market at the existing market place. Take note, work on the phase-I of the market executed by the Goa State infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) is nearly completion.
An early completion of the phase-I of the wholesale fish market assumes significance since it would pave the way for the GSIDC to take up phase-II of the market, before the agency takes up work of phase-II.
When The Goan contacted SGPDA Chairman Krishna Daji Salkar to shed light on the progress of work of the wholesale fish market, he was quick to inform that work on the phase-I of the market is finally nearing completion.
In fact, Salkar pointed out that the SGPDA intends to commission phase-I of the market by shifting all wholesale fish activities inside the market during the monsoons. “We expect the GSIDC to complete work on Phase-I of the market before the onset of monsoons. This would facilitate the shifting of the wholesale fish activities in the new market and pave the way for the GSIDC to take up phase-II on the balance PDA land”, he added.
