Fisherfolk and vendors plying their trade at the Panaji market are worried about the availability of facilities like platforms to place their fish on, adequate space and drainage facilities in the new makeshift shed built by the Corporation of the City of Panaji where business is expected to commence from October 1.
The CCP has built a temporary fabricated shed a few meters away from the current fish market to enable the demolition of the adjacent market building where the third phase of the new market complex is to come up.
"There are no platforms in this new shed. Also, the space may not be enough to accommodate all the vendors," according to Agostinho, who has been plying his fish-selling trade at the Panaji market for over a decade.
"Also, the new place has no provision for draining out the fish wastewater which will accumulate and create a mess in the passage meant for the movement of our customers," Agostinho added.
The CCP dispensation led by Mayor Rohit Monserrate, meanwhile, is set to begin operations in this new makeshift shed for the fish vendors from Tuesday (October 1) itself so that the civic body can then plan the demolition of the old market building.
Meanwhile, the Catholic fish-selling community operating in the Panaji market have raised concern over the future of the cross and shrine existing in the open space behind the old market building, which is up for demolition.
They have appealed to the authorities to make arrangements for the small shrine in their plans for demolition and construction of phase III of the new market complex.
