Heated discussions and tension prevailed at Curchorem, after the locals strongly opposed the segregation of garbage in a residential locality at Morailem-Curchorem.
As the tension was escalated and with residents showing no signs of dispersing till the contractor vacated the place along with the garbage collection vehicles, DySP Nilesh Rane along with the Quepem Joint Mamlatdar rushed to the site.
They assured to take up the issue before the Deputy Collector as they are not the right authorities to direct the contractor to stop the activity with immediate effect.
A heated discussion followed for some time between the GPCC President Amit Patkar and the DySP Rane, with Patkar arguing that the garbage segregation was severely affecting the life and health of residents in the locality.
The tense situation lasted for a couple of hours, after it was reportedly decided to have a meeting with the deputy collector to resolve the long-pending issue of waste dumping and segregation of wet waste at Morailem-Curchorem.
For about a fortnight, residents along with Patkar have been raising the issue of dumping of garbage and segregation of wet waste at Morailem-Curchorem.
A representation had been made to the urban development minister and waste management authorities.
However, the segregation of garbage in a thickly residential area continued and this angered the residents, who protested on Thursday and demanded an immediate stop to the segregation of wet waste in the locality.
