The fisheries minister paid a visit to Malim Jetty on Wednesday and while interacting with locals, was informed that the space (27 boxes) in the shed at the jetty were allotted to non-Goans.
During his visit, Paliencar observed that there was no discipline at Malim
jetty, as vehicles were parked in a haphazard manner and fish was being dried in open spaces.
Speaking to media persons, Paliencar said the fishing department had received a lot of complaints against allotment of spaces (boxes) in the shed and about the functioning of Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Co-operative Society.
“Hence, I visited the Malim jetty to take stock of the situation,” he said.
“A local told me that he had a stall in the shed a few years back. The stall was allotted to him on payment of Rs 2 lakh and that, no receipt was issued to him by the Society. He further complained that he was paying a rent of Rs 15,000 per month and now, all 27 stalls in the shed had been allotted to non-Goans.”
“The Goa Forward Party believes in safeguarding the interests of Goans, due to which I have directed the Director of Fisheries to take immediate possession of the fish stall shed,” Paliencar said.
He said the work on expansion of Malim jetty at a cost of Rs 50 crore is in progress, adding that the
length is being extended and an auction shed is being constructed at the site.
