Locals, fishermen and political leaders paid homage to late Mathany Saldhana on his 73rd Birth Anniversary at Cansaulim.

Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, GPCC President Girish Chodankar and Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott members attended the garlanding ceremony at Cansaulim market where his statue has been erected.

In a birth anniversary function, Cortalim MLA Alina Saldhana said people miss Mathany Saldanha as he had taken up several issues of the people and ramponkars.

Curtorim MLA and Congress leader Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco  praised Mathany Saldanha as an example that must take and inspire while adding that many people like him should be born in Goa.

Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott president Agnelo Rodrigues said that Mathany is remembered for his work and the fight he put up for the ramponkars and Goan people.

"Mathany Saldanha was the tallest leader  of Goa and the fishing community of Goa and India, but sadly his legacy has been uprooted by the present BJP government in Goa.The three linear projects through Mollem, the Major Ports Authority Bill, CRZ notification 2019,River Nationalization  and the Sagarmala projects planned in Goa are aimed at  destroying the environment of Goa and due to which several communities like the fishers, farmers, toddy tappers will be completely displaced from their occupation," said Rodrigues.

Congress leader Olencio Simoes said that the BJP govt has undone the work which the late Mathany Saldanha had done in the interest of Goa and its environment.

"BJP govt will face the results for pressing three linear projects on the people despite their opposition to it," said Simoes.

Congress leader Girish Chodankar alleged that BJP govt has used late Mathany Saldanha to gain votes but had  actually worked against the legacy of late Mathany.
