Curtains have finally come down on the fishing season with the 61-day ban on mechanized fishing has finally coming into force from tonight with majority of the fishing vessels dropping anchor at the Cutbona and other fishing jetties.
A visit to the Cutbona fishing jetty on Thursday revealed that majority of the fishing vessels had already dropped anchor since May 25 in the wake of the cyclonic winds in the Arabian Sea. A couple of boats, which had ventured out in the sea, were expected to return either tonight or tomorrow.
With the 61-day ban on fishing coming into force from midnight, officials of the taluka Mamlatdars are expected to descend at the fishing jetties to seal the fuel pumps. The taluka mamlatdars have been appointed as receivers of the jetties to implement the ban on fishing.
President of the Cutbona Boat Owners Union Savio D’Silva told The Goan at the jetty that the fishing ban has come into effect, saying that boat owners had an average fishing season this year.
