Five inmates at Sada sub-jail are accused of assaulting four under trials who were recently moved from Panaji to the Sada jail.
An under trial, Maneesh Shivpoojam Rai, submitted a complaint in this regard to the Sada sub-jail assistant Superintendent Banudas Pednekar, who in turn, forwarded the complaint to the Mormugao police.
Acting on Rai's complaint, Mormugao police registered an offence against five inmates, Pajesh Thakur, Chandu Lamani, Kutbnuddin Sandi alias Khushbao alias Salim Madarsab Sandi, Ritesh Dias alias Shirodkar and Mangesh Kankonkar under Section 143, 147, 323, 384, 506 (ii) read with 49 of IPC.
According to Mormugao PI Kapil Nayak, the complaint stated that Thakur, Lamani, Sandi, Shirodkar and Kankonkar had formed unlawful assembly inside the jail and had assaulted Maneesh and three of his friends, Abhishek Rai, Abhinav Rai and Gaurav Rai, causing them injuries.
In his complaint, Maneesh has stated that the five accused had demanded Rs 50,000 from them, failing which the five accused had threatened them with dire consequences.
“Maneesh, Abhishek, Abhinav and Gaurav were recently moved from Panjim to Sada sub-jail. Though the incident took place two days ago, the complaint was registered on Friday and the Mormugao police is further investigating the case,” said PI Nayak.
According to a reliable source in the jail, extortion is a common practice prevalent in the Sada sub-jail.
“Whenever any new accused is sent to judicial custody, senior inmates at Sada sub-jail befriend the new inmate for a check on the family background. If the new inmate hails from a rich background, these inmates resort to extortion,” disclosed the source, who alleged that jail authorities are aware of these activities going on inside the jail but choose to look the other way.
