North Goa Planning & Development Authority Chairman and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo had stressed on the need to improve power infrastructure in the coastal belt and pitched for a new power sub-station in Calangute.
“The electricity department has to shore up its infrastructure along the coastal belt. We badly need a new sub-station in Calangute. At the moment, we are drawing power from Candolim and Nagao power sub-station,” Lobo said speaking to The Goan.
He was responding to the electricity department’s notice restricting power supply to Candolim, Calangute, Baga and Arpora for eight day from January 3.
“The public of Candolim, Calangute, Baga and Arpora are informed that there will be restricted power supply during peak hours from January 3 to January 10 as Panaji will be drawing 33 KV supply from Porvorim on these days. All HT consumers as well as LTC consumers are requested to bear the inconvenience,” said a press note released by the Department of Information.
According to the electricity department’s Executive Engineer, the decision to restrict the supply was necessary in order to carry out some urgent work on the power line from Tivim to Kadamba plateau.
“The department is carrying out urgent work to replace some conductors on the power line from Tivim to Kadamab Plateau,” said Rajgopalan, Executive Engineer, Mapusa.
The Calangute MLA further said that Calangute people have had to suffer due to load shedding, which at time goes on for four to six hours.
“Running a 60-room hotel in Calangute on a generator for four hours is a costly affair. How long are we going to bear this problem,” Lobo questioned.
He said it was time the power infrastructure was upgraded and coastal villages were given a better deal.
