Chairman of the Fomento group of companies, Auduth Timblo, on Saturday expressed his fears whether there will be enough jobs left for the majority of the educated youth when the world is moving into an accelerated age of mechanization, computerization and digitalization.
Addressing young students at the Fomento Scholars Programme at the Gomant Vidya Niketan on Saturday, Timblo said the fears of people loosing their traditional jobs have become real with manufacturing, mining and even driving become peopleless in some countries. “Just imagine what would happen to the drivers when cars become driverless. And, what happens to the thousands of people who are rendered jobless? Our planners, who announce the creation of thousands of jobs, should asses this emerging situation,” he said.
Timblo reminded the young students, who have applied for the Fomento scholar scheme to study at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, USA, where education is not just about getting grades, but understanding social behaviour and acquiring skills in sports.
He made a fervent plea to the students to work hard and use their knowledge to stay contemporary, and warned them “if you fall back, then you will miss the bus and the next bus may not need you”.
In his address, former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat recalled the words of former President Abdul Kalam when he said that only education can make India a super power. He urged the young students to not only avail educational benefits, but also give back to the society. He complimented Fomento Chairman Auduth Timblo and praised Fomento scholars scheme that imparts training to young minds and prepares them for the long journey ahead.
Dr Lary Simonson of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, while addressing the students, pointed out that students passing out from the school have already secured good job placements with attractive salaries.
Fomento scholars scheme has so far provided scholarships to 23 students to get good quality engineering education in the USA.
Prof Uday Ballikar explained that around 70 students have applied for the Fomento scholars scheme and the students will be shortlisted after they answer the SAT exam as well as the Fomento scholars exam.
The shortlisted students will leave for higher studies to the USA in 2020, Prof Ballikar stated.
