Designed for pedestrians and two-wheelers, the footbridges have been a neglected lot despite the bridges being used by motorists in large numbers. Take the case of the Pedda-Khareband footbridge.
The surfaces of the footbridges have worn off, affecting the smooth flow of traffic, but the authorities have not stepped in to rectify and carry out repairs.
The railings on the footbridges have corroded and have turned an eyesore, but a fresh coat of paint have not been forthcoming from the concerned authorities. One can find green grass on the motorable surface of the Pedda-Khareband bridge, but neither PWD labourers or Margao Municipal workers have still not made their presence felt to undertake a clean-up operation.
Waste, including dry leaves, have accumulated on the bridge, but the same has not been lifted away till date.
Local resident, Prof Manoj Hede told The Goan that it is indeed sad that the authorities have not moved in to repair and maintain the footbridge. “The footbridge at Pedda-Khareband has been a vital link for the thousands of students studying in the educational institutions at Comba whenever the Comba rail crossing is closed for traffic. But, it is sad to note that there’s been no upkeep and maintenance of the footbridge till date,” Prof Hede lamented.
He said the district authorities, including South Goa district Collector should step in and direct the concerned authorities to stem the rot.
Though these footbridges were built by the Konkan Railway Corporation under cost-sharing basis, KRC officials have claimed that the bridges were subsequently handed over to the local PWD for their upkeep and maintenance.
