MARGAO
With the party’s attempts to win the Margao seat coming a cropper since the last decade and a half, the BJP seems to have set its sights on the constituency represented by Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat.
The Opposition leader was in the national capital on Saturday for a meeting with party high command along with GPCC Chief Girish Chodankar to discuss how to rebuild the party against the backdrop of the ZP debacle.
Back home, the CM, BJP President Sadanand Tanavade and other party leaders descended on the city during the weekend to guide the party workers at a training programme and gear them up for the 2022 battle of the ballot.
That the CM gave a parting message that the BJP will wrest the Margao seat in 2022 by bringing all party groups under a united banner indicates that the ruling party has a strategy in place to stop Kamat’s free run in the city.
The BJP had first won from Margao in 1994 when party nominee Digambar Kamat got elected from the city on the Lotus symbol. Since then the party retained the Margao seat in the 1999 and 2002 polls before Kamat decided to quit the party to embrace the Congress in 2005.
