Formation of corporation would benefit fishing community: GFBOA

VASCO
Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association (GFBOA) on Wednesday morning said a fisheries corporation would benefit the fishermen community as well as Goan in the State.

“A proposal for a corporation is in the pipeline but has not been implemented as yet. If taken up, it will help jetties get cold storage facilities, toilets, illumination and other facilities. Also, the fisheries department can buy fish from local fishermen, thus regulating the prices of fish while also offering good fresh fish to Goans,” said GFBOA President Jose Philip D’Souza, while addressing a news conference in Vasco.

“If the proposed fishing corporation can resolve issues of the fishermen and benefit Goans, the government should go ahead with the proposal.”

D'Souza also reiterated the demand for extension of the fishing jetty at Kharewado.

"We have a temporary landing jetty of 50 metres and if all 200 boats arrive together, they cannot offload fish in such a small jetty and hence, we had demanded a temporary extension for another 60 metres.”

“We also obtained a NOC for the jetty from the MPT and gave it to the State government, but it may not have been taken up due to the pandemic. The State government can also give us a floating pontoon as a temporary measure," said D'Souza.
