Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association (GFBOA) has thanked Fisheries Minister Philip Neri Rodrigues, the fisheries department and the coastal police for stopping trawlers from Malpe-Karnataka from fishing in Goan waters, which had badly hit trawlers owners and traditional fishermen.
“Trawlers from other states would scoop away smallest of the fish from Goa’s shoreline, causing a lot of losses to Goan fishermen who are already sinking due to poor business,” said GFBOA President Jose Philip D’Souza.
"Every Goan trawler has around 40 crew and sometimes, we cannot recover the costs. As many as 25 boats are not in operation. To add to this, we had hundreds of Karnataka fishing boats arriving and fishing in Goan water, causing further losses to Goan trawler owners."
"Last week, around 3 trawlers from Malpe were detained by the fisheries department and their fish had been auctioned. Since then, these boats have stopped fishing in Goan waters,” D'Souza added.
