Uncertainty over which way the pendulum will swing has left many former city-fathers wondering if they will make it or not to the new Mapusa Municipal Council.

At least one former chairperson, Ashish Shirodkar, appears to have thrown in the towel on the eve of the election result.

“I do not know if I will win or lose. But whichever way the result goes, it will be a difference of just 25 votes,” Shirodkar told The Goan.

He said his opponent, the BJP-backed candidate, had everything going his way.

“From the delimitation process to the government machinery, my opponent enjoyed all the advantage that a ruling government provides to its supporters,” he said.

Another former chairperson, Rupa Bhakta, is also facing a tough contest and if the mood in her ward is anything to go by, Bhakta appears to be on her way out.

“I have done my job. Let’s see what the people have to say,” a coy Bhakta said.

Former chairperson Michael Carrasco is also facing a tough contest in his ward. If at all he manages to tip the scale on his side, it will be only because of his experience.

Long-time councillor Subhash Kalangutkar is also facing a similar predicament in Ward 7 and his fate appears to be hanging in balance.

BJP Mandal president Rohan Kavlekar is confident that he will sail through but if public perception is anything to go by, he may be in for a surprise.

All eyes are on Ward 17 where GSUDA’s former vice-chairman Rajsingh Rane position does not seem to be all that rosy.
