Acting within 24 hours of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s assurance on the Assembly floor, the State Police has suspended four personnel, including two constables, and initiated departmental action against them for alleged misconduct. A head clerk and LDC are two others who are placed under suspension.
The action came a day after Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira raised serious allegations of corruption and a “rot” within the police department during Tuesday’s Assembly proceedings, prompting the Chief Minister to assure the House that police personnel would face suspension and inquiry.
As per the press note issued by Goa Police, Police Constable Gauresh Gawas, presently attached to Porvorim Police Station and previously posted at Valpoi Police Station, has been suspended over allegations of possessing disproportionate assets during his posting at Valpoi. A separate complaint against him is also pending before the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
Police Constable Sumesh Mandrekar (Buckle No. 9676) has been suspended and departmental action initiated over his alleged involvement in Crime No. 36/2026 registered at Colvale Police Station under Section 20(b)(ii)(A) of the NDPS Act. The constable has been chargesheeted in the case.
Head Clerk Mukund Menkurkar/ Lamgaonkar has been suspended and departmental proceedings initiated for allegedly inducing persons facing departmental enquiries to purchase LIC policies through his wife, who is an LIC agent. LDC Pratap Sawant has also been placed under suspension for allegedly collecting money from Home Guards on the promise of securing employment. Meanwhile, in yet another action, PSI Viraj Sawant, posted at Porvorim Police Station, has been attached to the GRP at Altinho following allegations of misbehaviour with hotel staff after the video went viral on social media. Further departmental action has been initiated against him. “The disciplinary proceedings are being conducted in accordance with the prescribed rules and principles of natural justice,” police said.
The police said it would not tolerate misconduct, corruption or violations of service discipline and that appropriate action would be taken against personnel found violating the law, service rules or prescribed standards of conduct.
