Four persons were rescued after a fire broke out in a flat at Naikawada, Calangute, on Monday, leaving the premises filled with thick smoke and causing damage estimated at around Rs 5 lakh.
The fire triggered panic among residents as smoke engulfed the building. On receiving the alert, firefighters from the Pilerne Fire Station rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.
The fire personnel entered the smoke-filled premises and safely evacuated all four occupants of a neighbouring flat who were reportedly struggling to breathe due to the heavy smoke.
The firefighters then battled the blaze and brought it under control, preventing the fire from spreading further and averting a potentially serious incident.
Household articles and other belongings in the affected flat were extensively damaged. The fire department has estimated the loss at around Rs 5 lakh.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
