Frauds rising, don’t fall prey to easy money, warn police

PANAJI

Against the backdrop of rising financial frauds, the Goa Police have issued an advisory warning people to be aware of tactics fraudsters use to lure investors into scams.

The Economic Offenses Cell (EOC) of Goa Police released an awareness video on Friday appealing to people to use the police expertise if they find any financial institution selling or offering huge returns on investments.

“There are various methods these fraudulent financial institutions reach out to the people. They assure huge interest to their investors who fall prey to their tricks. On receiving huge sums of money, these companies shut their shops and flee. We appeal to the people not to fall prey to such offers and instead verify if it is RBI-recognised or approach the police for assistance before investing your hard-earned money into any financial institution or private banks,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (EOC) Francisco Corte said in the video message circulated through the local media houses.

The EOC has received several dozen complaints of financial fraud wherein people have been cheated of several lakh of rupees.

SP Nidhin Valsan had recently urged people not to fall prey to ‘Ponzi schemes’ as out of eight cases registered with the EOC, nearly six cases have the same modus operandi wherein victims with exceptionally high income are cheated.

Valsan said that any suspicious scheme should be reported to the police through the 112 helpline number or a complaint on Goa Police’s official website.

His advice came in the backdrop of the arrest of notorious property broker Noor Ahmed, who conned several locals of crores of rupees with a promise to give them homes on a long lease and offered huge financial benefits.
