The Children of Freedom Fighters Associationon Thursday called off their fast unto death protest after State BJP President Sadanand Shet Tanavade visited the fasting freedom fighters and children with a written assurance that their demands will be fulfilled.
"The government has given a written assurance that the issue will be resolved by March 31. So we have also given an assurance to the government that we will stop our agitation," said Shivaji Shet, president of the Children of Freedom Fighters Association.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has given an assurance. A special list of freedom fighters' children for recruitment will be prepared.
Tanavade visited the fasting freedom fighters Suresh Parodkar, Nagesh Chari, Raya Shirodkar who are above 80 years of age and gave them lemon juice to break their fast.
Tanavade thanked the freedom fighters for peacefully taking back their protest. He said that CM Sawant has already assured in the assembly that jobs will be provided to the freedom fighters' children.
He said that late CM Manohar Parrikar during his tenure came with an official scheme to recruit freedom fighters' children and now CM Sawant is also sympathetic towards the employment issue pf freedom fighters' children.
For the last 8 days, freedom fighters and children were on a hunger strike at Azad Maidan.
Issue of recruitment of freedom fighters' children is pending for a long time. All such recruitment should have been finished in 2008 itself but the issue is still pending, lamented Shet thanking the government for giving an assurance to come out with a solution on the issue.
