Fresh waste dumping could nullify bio-remediation at Sonsodo: Vijai

Calling for concrete and comprehensive measures to resolve the Sonsodo mess, Town and Country Planning Minister, Vijai Sardesai on Friday raised apprehensions that the ongoing bio-remediation project at Sonsodo will be nullified if fresh waste continues to find its way on the old dump yard from the waste treatment plant.

He, however, expressed his satisfaction that the ongoing bio-remediation work has substantially reduced the existing waste dumping.
Sardesai also announced that the Sonsodo site will be covered
with a plastic membrane in order to prevent or reduce the flow of leachate into the water bodies.
The TCP Minister made his presence felt at the Sonsodo site on Friday morning in order to review the situation after bio-remediation work commenced at the site on April 2.
“We can see that the existing waste mound has been reduced substantially, but at the same time a new mound of fresh waste is taking shape at the site. Our entire work will be nullified by the fresh dumping of waste at the site. We have to take concrete and comprehensive steps to resolve the Sonsodo issue,” he added.
Sardesai said the waste from the waste treatment plant, which is supposed to go in a land fill site, finds its way onto the existing garbage site. ‘The permission for the land fill site has been given, but the work has not started till date,” he said.
Saying that garbage is affecting all, including the ruling and the opposition, the TCP Minister said the Sonsodo bio-remediation project is an apolitical project, adding that his endeavor is only to get rid of the age old problem and alleviate the hardships of the residents.
He said the compost generated during the bio-remediation project will be transported to the   government farm at Sanguem, adding that the plastic waste Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, who made his presence felt at Sonsodo, also echoed the sentiments expressed
by the TCP Minister, saying that all efforts made to rid the existing waste at Sonsodo will go in vain if a mound of fresh waste is allowed to take shape at the site.
“There ought to be measures taken on top priority to stop any fresh  dumping of waste on the existing dump yard. I hope the government will  come out with a comprehensive solution to the waste problem”, Reginaldo   said.
