Vasco-based NGO ‘Niz Goenkar Fauz’ (NGF) has written to the Vasco Urban Health Officer demanding action on vendors who dump vegetable waste in the open space near the post office in the Vasco vegetable market.

NGF has also demanded that the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) comes out with a concrete solution to avoid daily dumping of vegetable waste in the market.

Speaking to the media, NGF General Secretary Dr Kalidas Vaigankar said a large number of vendors dump vegetable waste in the open space, causing foul smell and making it a breeding site for mosquitoes.

“This is an eyesore and besides being a public nuisance, it is also a health hazard. Vegetable vendors dump their waste daily just inside the market premises. Several vendors also sit on the road and sell lemons and other items near this dump.”

“We have demanded that the health department carry out a site inspection. We have also demanded that authorities initiate strict action against vendors dumping garbage in the open space inside the market,” added Dr Vaigankar.

Dr Vaigankar also demanded that MMC come out with a permanent solution to stop dumping of vegetable waste in the market, which would also prevent stray cattle from entering the market.
