The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) admitted that it could not cope up with the growing garbage menace and decided to approach the Goa Waste Management Corporation on waste dumped on the borders of the municipal area.
The council has also decided to write to the Colvale jail authorities on its incapability to lift garbage generated in the jail.
"Garbage dumped on the periphery of the municipal jurisdiction mainly by people from villages has become a huge problem for the civic body to tackle," said MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar while addressing a council meeting on Wednesday.
He said the council's daily door-to-door waste collection system in the city was running smoothly, but the waste coming from the bordering areas was turning out to be a big burden.
The chairperson also informed the council that the Goa Waste Management Corporation has taken the responsibility to clear garbage dumped in open spaces.
Councilor, Martin Carrasco pointed out that the civic body was lifting waste from the Colvale jail, which comes under the Colvale panchayat even as councilors found it difficult to get garbage trucks and labour to clear waste from the wards.
"I think we should stop collecting waste from the Colvale jail and focus our energy within the municipal areas," Carrasco said.
Objecting to his junior colleague's suggestion, councillor Ryan Braganza said it was a bad idea, as finally fingers would be pointed at the civic body.
"The garbage dumped at the city limits are all entry points to Mapusa. In the end, everyone will blame the council for not lifting the garbage," Braganza said.
Saner voices like that of former chairperson, Sandip Falari said it was not right to suddenly stop a system that was in place and suggested the council write to the authorities concerned about the issues faced by the council.
"As a first step, we will write to the authorities concerned so that an alternative system could be put in place," Falari said. The council decided to write both to the jail authorities and the GWMC on the garbage problem faced by the civic body.
