Traditional fishermen from Salcete coastal belt got a temporary reprieve on Thursday after the SGPDA assured the fishermen that the PDA will not close the entrance gate to the wholesale fish market till January 11 when a joint meeting is expected to deliberate the entire gamut of issues affecting the wholesale fish market.
This assurance was given to a delegation of ramponkars from Colva and Benaulim when they called on SGPDA Chairperson Dr Renuka Da Silva on Thursday. John Fernandes impressed upon the SG
John said the traditional fishermen have no objection if the PDA or the police launch a crackdown on the retail sale of fish in the wholesale fish market, but demanded protection for the ramponkars. "There cannot be any timings for the ramponkars. You crack a whip against the retail sale, but spare the traditional fishermen who bring fish to the wholesale fish market from the sea," he said.
After giving the ramponkars a patient hearing, the SGPDA Chairperson told the media that the PDA will not close the gates of the wholesale fish market since the move has hampered the operations of the traditional fishermen. "It has been decided to convene a joint meeting with the ramponkars, SGPDA and the Margao Municipal Council on January 11 to resolve all these issues. Till then, the gates of the wholesale fish market will not be closed at 9.30 am," Renuka said.
John later told the media that the fishermen have got an assurance that the wholesale fish market gates will remain open till January 11.
