Minister for Sports Govind Gaude failed to give a convincing reply to the Legislative Assembly over allegations of sexual harassment against a coach, who also serves as the minister’s advisor.
During a discussion on grants for the Sports Department, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai expressed concern over the alleged special treatment towards the tainted coach. He also charged that the trainer pretends to be in charge of the upcoming National Games 2023 and went on to state that he will seek Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention.
“It is a serious issue because the Sexual Harassment Committee, based on Vishaka guidelines, has indicted the coach in its report and sought appropriate action. Three cases are filed against him, despite which, the coach is the advisor to the minister and behaves as the overall in-charge of National Games,” Sardesai alleged.
The legislator also questioned Gaude's intention to “keep him (the coach) close” demanding an answer whether the government is serious about protecting women from sexual harassment.
“I think I will have to write to the Prime Minister because Vishaka Committee guidelines are binding and the department isn't acting on it,” he further said.
The legislator also pointed out another alleged irregularity wherein a contractor is appointed an honorary treasurer.
Gaude failed to give a convincing reply and seemed unwilling to take action against the coach, citing difficulty in finding a quality replacement.
“One should not dig the past... We should move forward... It is difficult to get a quality coach,” he added.
Sardesai pointed out the likely negative impact on the minister's functioning by keeping the coach, but Gaude denied interfering with the independent body.
“We need their service towards sports. We can decide on action later,” he said.
