Valpoi
A road accident occurred near Piso Temple on the Mhaus–Valpoi main road in Sattari taluka after a wild gaur (Indian bison) rammed into a scooter, injuring Suresh Kopardekar of Koparde.
According to information available, Kopardekar was travelling on his scooter along the Mhaus–Valpoi road when a wild gaur suddenly came onto the road near Piso Temple and collided with the scooter. He was thrown onto the road and sustained injuries.
Local residents rushed to the spot and assisted the injured rider. He was later shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Sources said he is undergoing treatment.
Residents said wild animals are frequently seen in Mhaus, Koparde, Valpoi, the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary region and other forest areas of Sattari. Gaur, wild boar, deer and other animals are seen near roads, particularly during the early morning, evening and night.
Residents said animal movement increases during the monsoon as wildlife comes closer to roads in search of food and water. They said several roads in the area have witnessed accidents involving wild animals.
The Mhaus–Valpoi road, Koparde and other rural roads in Sattari have witnessed similar incidents in the past. Residents said several roads lack warning signs, speed-control measures, adequate lighting and marked wildlife crossing areas.
Following the accident, residents urged the Forest Department, Public Works Department, Transport Department and local administration to take safety measures. They demanded the installation of wildlife warning signs, enforcement of speed limits, improved lighting along vulnerable stretches and identification and marking of wildlife crossing areas.
Appeal for caution
The Forest Department and residents have appealed to motorists to exercise caution while travelling on the Mhaus–Valpoi road and other roads near forest areas. Motorists have been advised to drive at low speeds during the monsoon and reduce speed when animal movement is noticed along the roadside.
Residents said measures are needed to reduce the risk of accidents involving wildlife on roads near forest areas.
