GCA office bearers’ bail hearing adjourned

A Mapusa court has scheduled the hearing of anticipatory bail pleas of two present and one former office bearers of the Goa Cricket Association in the cheating and misappropriation of funds case on January 2, 2017.
When the anticipatory bail hearing of the trio came up before the Additional District and Sessions Court-I on Tuesday, Judge P V Sawaikar adjourned the plea to January 2, 2017.
GCA president Chetan Desai, secretary Vinod Phadke and the cricket body’s former treasurer, Akbar Mulla had filed application for anticipatory bail soon after Goa Police registered a second case of cheating against the trio.
Former deputy chief minister and ex-GCA president, Dayanand Narvekar has also been implicated in the case.
The Economic Cell of Goa Police on December 20 registered a second case of cheating and misappropriation of funds amounting to Rs one crore against the four.
According to the police, the crime allegedly took place in the financial year 2006-07, when all the four were office bearers of GCA and also signatory authorities of the body.
Interestingly, police action against the four has raised eyebrows, as the move happened when the assembly elections were just round the corner.
Moreover, Vinod Phadke had recently joined MGP and was the party’s ticket aspirant in Mapusa. Former deputy chief minister, Dayanand Narvekar was also toying with the idea of contesting in the ensuing polls from Porvorim.
In June this year, EOC had first booked the four for alleged misappropriation of a cheque of Rs 2.87 crore received by GCA in 2006.
Soon after the first case Akbar Mulla had resigned as the treasure of the GCA.
