It may be recalled that in a unique tie-up in educational area, Sesa Goa Ltd had entered into a partnership with the Goa Engineering
College in 2012 to start mining engineering department and the entire expenditure was met by the mining
company.
An agreement was signed for five years, which ended in December last year. Hence, now the GEC is bound to meet the expenditure.
Sources informed that though GEC has sent a proposal to the government to make provision of funds to run this department, it is yet to receive any reply.
According to the irate students, they have apprehension that their faculties would leave the jobs as they are not paid since the agreement has ended and it could affect their studies.
“Faculties are teaching us without pay, why they should suffer unnecessarily,” a student gathered at the mining engineering department
questioned.
According to the students, they will boycott the classes if this issue is not addressed by the authorities. “Where do we find jobs when mining in Goa is running at a slow pace? Campus placement has been stopped and nobody is bothered about it,” said a student.
Two batches of this department have already passed out and the third batch will
be answering their final exam in May.
When contacted, GEC Principal Dr Vinayak Shet refused to comment on the issue.
