German tech to improve Vasco fish market drainage system

Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Friday said the government has decided to use advanced German materials and technology to improve the New Vasco Fish Market's drainage system, ensuring proper flow of wastewater and maintaining better sanitation standards for both vendors and customers.

Salkar was speaking to reporters after a detailed inspection of the New Vasco Fish Market along with Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, officials of Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), engineers and municipal officials to review the issues related to drainage and hygiene within the market.

The MLA pointed out that one of the major reasons for the recurring drainage problem is the widespread use of cardboard sheets by fish vendors as makeshift shelves. According to him, fish water flows out of the cardboard and eventually spills onto the market floor, creating slippery conditions that pose a serious safety risk to visitors.

He urged vendors to discontinue the practice and adopt proper arrangements that would help maintain cleanliness inside the market.

Salkar further appealed to fish vendors to bring their representatives and leaders for discussions before the final phase of the drainage improvement works is undertaken so that their suggestions can also be considered during execution.

He alleged that certain opposition leaders have been unnecessarily politicising the issue by misleading fish vendors and creating confusion over the state-of-the-art fish market developed by the government. Instead of provoking protests, he said all stakeholders should work together to ensure the market functions efficiently and provides a clean, safe and hygienic environment for vendors as well as the public.
