The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) on Friday directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to submit a report to the Commission regarding the corroded water pipes in Pajifond, Margao.
Taking suo moto cognisance of the matter after ‘The Goan’ reported the issue on Friday, Member Secretary of the GHRC AD Salkar issued a notice to the Chief Engineer of the PWD in Altinho, as well as the Executive Engineer of Works Division IX (PHE) of the PWD Fatorda. Salkar has directed them to “submit a detailed report so as to reach the Commission on or before March 15.”
After plumbers dug up an underground water line to join it to a PVC line on Thursday, they not only found that the underground distribution pipe was corroded on the outside, but the inside too, raising serious questions on quality of water supplied to government quarters by the PWD.
One could see rust and accumulation of some particles inside the pipe, which had been supplying water to the Junta quarters residents 24x7 over the years.
Dozens of government quarters at Pajifond are dependent on the corroded line for their round-the-clock water supply and the shock revelation that the pipe was corroded inside too has left many a question unanswered.
The government quarters at Pajifond, sources said, were built decades ago shortly after the liberation of the state, raising questions as to why the water distribution lines have not been replaced till date.
In fact, PWD officials in the know informed ‘The Goan’ that there were many underground water distribution lines in the commercial capital and outside which were laid decades ago and were still awaiting replacement.
