Politics in sleep mode: Vijai

Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai on Friday ruled out the possibility of the Goa legailsative assembly being kept in ‘suspended animation’ or being dissolved and dismissed reports suggesting such a possibility in the wake of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s recent health scare.

“Just as nobody wants war, nobody wants dissolution of the Assembly,” Sardesai said on the sidelines of the press conference he addressed at the State Secretariat following the Town and Country Planning Board meeting he had chaired.

Reports of the possibility of the Legislature’s dissolution gained currency earlier this week after Sardesai’s cabinet colleague and PWD Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar made a pitch, as a preferred option, for keeping the Assembly in ‘suspended animation’ with Governor’s rule for limited period instead of dissolving the House.

Dhavalikar’s statement, widely reported by the media had given wings to reports that the BJP top brass is looking at dissolution of the House as an option with it while grappling with the task of putting in place a party leadership command sans the ailing Parrikar in the

picture.

Sardesai, however, brushed aside Dhavlikar’s statement saying he did not see either of the scenarios - House dissolution or keeping it in suspended animation - likely to happen in Goa.

“Who will have to do it (suspended animation)? The Governor or the Centre? Why would they do it?,” Sardessai asked, adding that no one wanted it just as no one wants a war.

Probed further, Sardesai denied there was any backhand political activity currently on among the parties and Independent legislators from the ruling coalition.

He also declined to comment on reports that the BJP was looking to lure into its fold the two MLAs of the MGP - Tourism Minister Manohar (Babu) Ajgaonkar and GSIDC chairman Deepak Pauskar - to get back the ‘single largest party’ tag it lost following Francis D’Souza’s passing away.

“All I can say is that politics in Goa is in ‘sleep mode’ at the moment,” Sardesai said.
