An internship opportunity at a reputed company allegedly became the flashpoint for bitter fallout between two Goa Institute of Management (GIM) students on September 5. The Valpoi police, probing the circumstances that led to the attack, have made it clear that there will be no leniency towards Sukanya Sabbhani of Hyderabad, who was arrested for allegedly stabbing Lucknow-native Umme Aiman. Official sources told The Goan that the two friends were preparing for internship interviews much like several other students at the business school in Sattari, before their fallout. "The preparation became a source of friction between the two. They entered into a verbal duel after which both proceeded their way within the campus. It eventually escalated into a violent attack,” the source added.
Sukanya, 26, who is married and whose husband works in Bengaluru, was handed over to the police after the incident. She was arrested for attempted murder and initially remanded to five days of police custody. The Court subsequently sent her to judicial custody.
"We will seek an extension of her custody when she is produced before the court at the end of the current remand period. If she files a bail application, that too will be opposed,” the police said. According to Umme’s complaint, Sukanya allegedly entered her room in Hostel No. 2 on the GIM campus late on September 5 and attacked her with a knife while she was asleep. The assault allegedly left her with a deep injury to her neck and severe bleeding. Police said the accused also allegedly inflicted serious cut injuries on Umme’s hands and threatened to kill her. The victim was recently discharged from the hospital but has not yet been able to resume attending classes.
