GMC gets okay for additional MBBS, MD postgraduate seats

Students aspiring for prestigious MBBS or post-graduate MD seats at the Goa Medical College will breathe a tad easier as the institution will now add 20 more undergraduate and 18 MD postgraduate seats with the National Medical Commission (NMC) giving its nod for the increased intake from the current 2024-25 academic year.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane announced the development via his official handle on micro-blogging site ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) saying, the NMC has sanctioned the expansion of several postgraduate MD/MS courses at GMC.

“Goa Medical College has received approval from the National Medical Commission to increase MBBS seats from existing 180 to 200 from the academic year 2024-2025. In addition, approval has also been granted to increase the postgraduate MD/MS seats across several specialties, including Radiodiagnosis, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pharmacology, and Paediatrics,” Rane said in his post on ‘X’.

“This expansion shows our commitment to foster medical talent and address the growing demand for skilled professionals. Approval of seat increases in various postgraduate MD/MS courses, including Radiodiagnosis, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pharmacology and Paediatrics will enable us to provide more opportunities for aspiring doctors and specialists,” Rane said in his ‘X’ post.

The newly approved increase in postgraduate seats include MD Radiodiagnosis, which will now accommodate seven students up from the previous six, MS General Surgery with a significant increase from 6 to 15 seats, MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology now 8 from the previous 6, MD Pharmacology increasing from 4 to 6 seats and MD Pediatrics which will have 10 seats instead of the previous seven.
