With a fellowship in advanced knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgeries (UK) and trained under renowned arthroscopic surgeon, Dr Sachin Tapasvi and Dr Gunther Schimitgen (UK), Dr Chodankar has performed more than 600 major knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgeries at Goa Medical College.
According to Dr Chodankar, the focus till date has largely been on adult ACL reconstruction. However, seeing the growing incidence of injuries in younger patients (6-14 years of age), sports medicine specialist should focus on this age group.
Paediatric knee ligament injuries are seen more commonly than ever before, especially in young athletes. The commonest in this group is the
ACL tear.
The knee joint is largely responsible for the growth of the limb. Hence surgeries done in this age group (6-14 years) and around the knee are technically demanding as any damage to their growth plates around the knee will cause irreversible growth disturbances.
