GMC successfully harvests kidneys, liver of 62-yr-old brain dead patient

Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim (GMCH) late on Monday carried out the retrieval of organs and subsequent transportation and transplant of these from a 62-year-old woman donor, who was declared brain dead.

The surgery was performed at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim according to the protocols of State Organ and Tissue 

Transplant Organization (SOTTO).

The Health Minister tweeted the details of the organ donation. “@GoaGmc in its continued efforts to save lives has conducted yet another successful case of Organ Retrieval & Transplant from a Brain Dead Donor under the Deceased Donor Transplant Programme of SOTTO Goa,” he posted.

The Health Minister further informed that the 62-year-old woman was admitted for subarachnoid haemorrhage, after a clinical diagnosis and was declared brain dead. Her family stepped forward and requested for organ donation of the deceased.

“Their gesture has saved three precious lives,” the Health Minister said.

It was learnt that the kidneys were allocated to SOTTO at GMC while the liver was allocated to a patient at IKDRC Hospital, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Transplant surgeon from GMC’s Department of Urology Dr Madhumohan Prabhudesai is scheduled to interact with the media on Wednesday to speak about the case which is the second instance of organ donation by a brain dead patient in Goa.
