The Aam Aadmi Party, on Wednesday, complained to the Director of Mines and Geology that the concessionaire of the greenfield airport at Mopa - GMR - was illegally transporting bauxite mined from the plateau where it is working on the airport.
In the complaint, AAP’s Pradeep Ghadi Amonkar said, local residents have informed that massive transportation of extracted material from inside the airport construction area took place before the Supreme Court imposed a stay order on the work in mid-January.
Amonkar pointed out that the Mopa plateau is rich in bauxite reserves as per the mining department’s own records and demanded that an investigation be launched into the issue immediately.
He has also alleged that the bauxite transported from the area is possibly sold without the mining department’s knowledge.
Amonkar said large stacks of bauxite are visible from outside the Mopa airport construction area and demanded stringent action against GMR if the illegalities are confirmed.
