A group of about five youth from Vasco came to the rescue of residents at Bhutebhat on Tuesday, after they rescued five pythons in one day.
The residents in the area had complained that a python was seen in the area moving dangerously close to their houses.
The residents also alleged that several calls were made to the forest department but nothing had happened and the python was still seen in the area.
While the residents lived in fear, a group of close friends decided to attempt rescuing the python from the area.
Narrating the incident, a group member Sameer Khan said the group began their task on Tuesday evening near the Bhutebhat ground and waited patiently for the python, when a slithering sound caught their attention near the nullah that flows along side the ground.
“We saw a python trying to catch a large rat and we immediately caught its tail. The python struggled a bit but we as a group began to pull it as it was trying to go back to its hole near the nullah.”
“As we tried to use a stick, we were surprised to hear more noises in the area. We were taken aback when we saw that another python had appeared to target the same rat that was injured,” said Khan.
Said another member Ron Vaz: “As we began our task trying to pull the other python with help of locals, we realized that most of them had appeared from a particular area. As we tried to overturn a huge stone, we found three more pythons and we managed to rescue five pythons in the process.”
A resident on condition of anonymity said the pythons were later left in a dense forest near Santre area.
“We had called the forest department and we were told to get the pythons to Panaji. Who will bother to go all the way to Panaji? So, we decided to release the pythons in a dense forest. Some people had even called the police but they said that it was forest department who had to decide on the matter.”
“Many residents then suggested we release the pythons in a dense forest not surrounded by residential houses,” said the resident.
