Goa’s first bio-digester toilet has been installed by the Rural Development Agency (RDA) at Nerul church and similar toilets have been planned in other parts of the State.

RDA Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar inaugurated the bio-digester toilet installed by the Our Lady of Remedies Church in Nerul in the presence of Nerul Parish Priest Fr Olavo Caiado, Fr Bolmax Pereira, Nerul Sarpanch Piedade Almeida, Dy Sarpanch Abhijeet Banaulikar and Panch members, Prakash Hoble, Reshma Kalangutkar and Avinash Shirodkar.

Stating that the bio-digester toilet installed at Nerul is the first of its kind in the State, Salgaonkar said the state government is in the process of procuring these bio-digester toilets, priced at Rs 2 lakh apiece, from the Science and Technology department in Pune.

“The Nerul church recently completed 450 years and they needed a community toilet as a lot of people visit this historic church. The beautification of this church will be undertaken by the GSIDC.”

“The RDA plans to install such bio-digester toilets in other parts of Goa. A survey is being done and as soon as the report is received from panchayats, the same will be installed in specific places. Households will also be supplied with these toilets at concessional rates. These toilets do not pollute the ground water table like other toilets and hence, they are very safe,” said Salgaonkar.
