Parents of students of Stds IX and XI have requested the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary
Education (GBSHSE) to conduct supplementary exams for even those students who have more than two backs, secretary of the GBSHSE Bhagirath Shetye said on Wednesday.
The Goa Board will discuss this proposal during its executive council meeting set to be held on June 21. However, the secretary said that the agenda for the
meeting has not yet been prepared, but will be ready in a day or two. As per the current rules, only students who fail in one or two subjects are allowed to answer the supplementary exams. If the rules are amended following the request from
parents, students who have failed even in three, four, five or six subjects will be allowed to answer the supplementary exam.
The trend over the years for schools that come under the GBSHSE is that around 9,000 to 10,000 students fail in Std IX. In a lot of
cases, schools deliberately do this so that they achieve good results for the Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSC).
The same is followed for students of Std XI. If the students clear their supplementary exams, they would save a year by being promoted to the next class.
