Leopard sighted at Ugvem
PERNEM: Residents of Ugvem-Pernem have expressed fear after they saw a leopard moving in the village over the last 15 days.
Former ZP member Supriya Mahale has urged the forest department to initiate measures to nab the leopard.
Speaking to reporters, Mahale said a leopard is seen moving in the village for the last 15 days. “On Monday, some neighbours came to my house and informed me that they saw a leopard near their houses and requested me to contact the officials concerned,” said Mahale.
It may be recalled that a leopard was found dead after it was hit by a train at Poraskade, near the village of Ugvem. Locals suspect there are more leopards in the vicinity of the village and urged the forest officials to nab the big cats immediately.
Drama fest begins today at KA
PANAJI: In a bid to promote more Goans in theater, the National School of Drama, New Delhi has joined hands with the State Directorate of Art and Culture to organize the first classical drama festival between March 24 to March 27, at Kala Academy.
The four-day event will see theatrical presentations by groups from Manipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Lucknow and Mumbai. Works by noted directors Ratan Thiyam, late KN Panikkar, Surya Mohan Kulshreshtha and Waman Kendre will be presented.
On the first day, Ratan Thiyam’s Urubhangam will be presented by the Chorus Repertory Theatre from Manipur. KN Panikkar’s Shakuntala, will be presented by Thiruvananthapuram’s Sopanam in Sanskrit on March 25, while on March 26, Lucknow based NIPA Rangmandali will present Surya Mohan Kulshreshtha’s Bhagvadjjukeeyam and on March 27 Mumbai based Rangpeeth will present Waman Kendre’s Mohe Piya in Hindi.
Economics conclave ends at BITS Pilani
PANAJI: The BITS Goa Economics Conclave was organised by the Department of Economics, BITS Pilani KK Birla Goa Campus on March 20, with the theme: Changing Contours of Indian Economy: Welfare Implications & Policy Responses.
Economist Prof Satya R Chakravarty (Kolkata) delivered a talk on equity and efficiency issues related to multidimensional economic inequality, which was followed by a talk by Prof MG Chandrakanth (Bengaluru) who pointed out the dangers of unsustainable growth. Dr Sibichen K Mathew (Bengaluru) described the problems associated with tax compliance and how technology is helping to increase compliance and enforcement. GR Akadas (Goa) explained the problems faced by MSME sector in Goa. The first day concluded with an address by Prof Arun Kumar (New Delhi) who explained how demonetisation might not be effective in curbing the black economy in India.
The event concluded on March 21, with presentations by Padma Bhushan Madhav Gadgil along with other delegates. The event was sponsored by NABARD and SIDBI and its aim was to provide an avenue for disseminating contemporary public policy research and emerging practices.
Create awareness on organ donation: IMA
BICHOLIM: Indian Medical Association (IMA) president Dr Medha Salkar said the IMA Goa unit with its team of doctors is making efforts to create awareness on organ donation after the death of a relative as it may save the lives of many others.
Dr Salkar was addressing a news conference in Bicholim. Oncologist and Bicholim IMA president Dr Shekhar Salkar, Dr Amol Mahaldar, Dr Kalpana Chodankar and Dr Kartavi Mashelkar were present.
Organ donation cell coordinator Dr Mahaldar said presently people in Goa are not aware that live organs of a dead person can be used for other patients through transplantation. He said the rate of kidney transplant in Goa is very low as compared to other states in India. “From about 7000 transplants in India, Goa has only 14 per year since the last five years,” he said.
Dr Medha Salkar said IMA has signed MoU with TPM DTI, an international renowned expert in promoting Deceased Brain Dead (DBD) transplant in Barcelona and Spain.
