Doctors in Goa like in other parts of the country will strike work for 24-hours from 6 am on Monday but will ensure that essential medical services and emergency care will not be affected by their protest against assaults on doctors by relatives of patients across the country.
The strike has been called by Indian Medical Association nationwide in protest against the attack on doctors at Kolkata’s state-run NRS Hospital by the kin of a patient who died last week. An intern suffered serious head injuries in the incident with the family of the deceased patient claiming medical negligence.
IMA’s Goa branch said emergency and casualty services will not be affected by Monday’s strike which will begin at 6 am and end at the same hour on Tuesday. All IMA doctors will also be available to attend to all emergencies in the duration of the strike, it added.
IMA Goa doctors are also planning to have a ‘silent morcha’ in Panjim on Monday morning from Azad Maidan to the old GMC complex.
Earlier last week, resident doctors at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim also staged a protest to show solidarity against the assault of the Kolkata doctors.
The resident doctors protested at the Goa Medical College campus in Bambolim.
GARD President, Dr Veeresh HM, had strongly condemned the attack on the doctor on duty at the NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He, however, had said doctors will attend to emergency services at GMC.
