Goa’s October heat is feeling considerably harsher than the thermometer suggests, with the perceived temperature reaching around 43°C as the State recorded a maximum of 34.4°C on Saturday, 3.4°C above normal, amid above-normal humidity.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD-Goa) classified the conditions as hot and humid, with the maximum temperature at a station remaining at least 3°C above normal and relative humidity above normal.
The State recorded a minimum temperature of 25.4°C, which was also 1°C above normal, leaving little relief even during the night.
For most people, the heat remains tolerable, but the IMD has warned of a moderate health concern for vulnerable groups, including infants, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses. Prolonged exposure can also increase the risk of dehydration, heat cramps and heat rash, particularly during the peak afternoon hours.
The advisory, IMD said, is especially relevant for people working outdoors as it recommended avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun between 11 am and 3 pm, scheduling strenuous work during cooler parts of the day and increasing the frequency and duration of rest breaks.
Workers exposed to the heat require particular caution, with additional attention advised for pregnant workers and those with existing medical conditions.
Residents have also been advised to drink water at regular intervals even when they do not feel thirsty. ORS and traditional rehydrating drinks such as lassi, torani, lemon water, sugarcane juice and buttermilk have been suggested to replenish fluids.
“The heat could also have other consequences as there is a possibility of dry grass catching fire. The farmers are further advised to continue irrigation of sugarcane, summer maize, pulses, vegetables and other crops,” an IMD official said.
The advisory lists weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating and seizures among warning signs associated with heat-related illness, and advises immediate medical attention if a person feels faint or unwell.
The IMD has forecast very light to light rainfall in the Ghat areas from October 3 to 6, but otherwise dry weather is likely across the State. From October 7 to 9, dry conditions are expected to prevail over both districts.
