Under the “social media cell” initiative started by the Goa police around six months ago, the Goa Police will soon have its own official Twitter handle, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jaspal Singh IPS said on Friday.

Through its Twitter handle, the police will analyse Goa-related content on a day-to-day basis, respond to the public from time to time, and act upon complaints received from the public, said Singh speaking to “The Goan” on the sidelines of a sensitisation programme held for police and NGOs at the Police on the issues surrounding child crimes at the Gazetted Police Officer’s Institute, Altinho.

The IGP said that the focus of the team is especially on micro-blogging site Twitter, where the police can get a feel of how Goans feel about, for example, the “GoaMiles” taxi app. He also said that the “social media initiative” started by the police around six months ago was progressing well and was set to get an even bigger push with central agencies training the team. He said it was important for the police to know public sentiment on issues that could lead to a law and order problem.

Under the initiative, Singh said that everyday, the top police officials get a report from the social media cell on issues being discussed by the public on social media.

The team was set up to deal with Goa-specific issues discussed on social media, since social media has become a powerful medium of interaction in recent times.
