Minister for Water Resources Subhash Shirodkar has set an ambitious goal for Goa to eliminate water shortages by 2047 while outlining his vision to secure the State's water resources and revive the agricultural sector.
"I am working with a target that by 2047, Goa should not face any shortage of water," Shirodkar declared. He also shared updates on the Sal River project, which is expected to enhance water supply in the state.
"From 2025, the Sal project we have undertaken will ensure water reaches as far as Calangute. However, there may be some issues this year due to the ongoing construction of the barrage," he explained.
The WRD Minister was speaking at the inauguration of a beautified pond (tollem) in Grande Coimavaddo, Aldona, on Wednesday in the presence of Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira and others.
The Minister also emphasised the need to reinvigorate the agriculture sector under the Water Resources Department (WRD).
Noting the decline in agricultural activities in the state, Shirodkar said, "Goans have been giving up agriculture, and soon we will need to take better care of our land. The priority is for the farmers. There are about 4,000 families involved, and we must provide them with all the necessary support."
Shirodkar’s remarks came during a ceremony that marked the completion of beautification work on the local tollem, which he promised would be further enhanced with benches and street lighting to make it a leisure spot for the community.
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira, who was present at the event, praised Shirodkar for his dedication and timely completion of the project.
"The Minister’s commitment to the farmers and the State as a whole is evident in his work. He delivered on his promise well ahead of time," Ferreira said.
The Congress MLA also recalled the WRD's efforts to sanction an amphibious weed removal machine to clean the Mapusa River, as well as areas in Pomburpa and Ucassaim.
The WRD Minister concluded by asking his officials to prepare a proposal for further beautification of the pond area, signalling his intent to improve public spaces for local communities.
