With the Benaulim incident of rape of two minor girls still fresh in people’s mind, the semi-nude body of a missing girl found on the Calangute beach, early Thursday morning, sent shock waves in the State even as the autopsy report later in the evening ruled out foul play and attributed the cause of death to drowning.
The recovery of the dead body of a 19-year-old girl, who hails from a village in Bardez, on the famous Calangute beach triggered impulsive outrage on the social media with netizens blaming the government for deteriorating law and order in the State.
Calangute Police have registered an unnatural death.
The incident came to light around 6.30 am, after some people saw the semi-nude body of the girl on the main Calangute beach and informed police.
Police rushed to the spot, conducted the panchanama and sent the body for post-mortem to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
Police sources said except for the underwear there were no clothes on the body of the deceased. Police also informed that no footwear was found at the scene.
Since the body was in a semi-nude state, there was speculation that it could be a case of rape and murder and the police were awaiting the autopsy report.
Later in the evening, the post-mortem report said death of the girl was due to drowning ruling out sexual assault or murder.
“There is no evidence of physical violence including sexual assault. We have registered an unnatural death but investigations are going on,” said Edwin Colaco, DySP Porvorim.
The deceased teen, the eldest among four siblings, went missing a day earlier and the parents had reported the matter to the Mapusa Police.
The girl was working at a popular fast food restaurant franchise in a mall at Porvorim.
On Wednesday morning her father dropped her at the Hotel Green Park, Guirim and from there she travelled to the Mapusa bus-stand.
“She was last spotted at the Mapusa bus-stand on Wednesday morning,” a police officer investigating the case informed.
Sources informed that the girl was under depression.
Incidentally, the girl had left her mobile at home on the fateful day.
The deceased, who is known to be very sober in her habits in the village, comes from a lower middle class family and was the only other earning member besides her father who is a motorcycle pilot.
