The shocking data has come to light through the annual report titled ‘Road Accidents in India- 2016' published by the Transport Research Wing of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
In the year 2016, Goa recorded 217.7 accidents per lakh population, almost six times the national average of 37.9. If it spells any solace, the figures have reduced slightly over the years from 229.9 in 2013.
The report states that 17 Goans per lakh population lost their lives in fatal road accidents in 2016.
The lowest number of accidents per lakh population in 2016 was recorded in Lakshadweep (1.2) and Nagaland (3.2).
