With the Covid surge unrelenting, the Goa University on Thursday deferred all its offline examinations for final year students which were slated to begin from Friday by three weeks.
The examinations will now be rescheduled to commence from February 7, a circular issued by the University said.
“It has been decided that all the offline examinations of the general and professional programmes scheduled to start on January 14, 2022, onwards are postponed by three weeks and shall be conducted from February 7, 2022, onwards,” the circular states.
There will however be no change in the examination schedule in the online mode for first and second-year students which will continue to be held as per the original schedule.
Several student bodies including the Congress affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Wing of Aam Aadmi Party had been demanding that the offline examination schedule be cancelled given the Covid surge.
On Thursday, the State recorded a single-day spike of 3,728 cases with a whopping positivity rate of 39.4 per cent.
The NSUI had on Monday submitted their demand for cancellation of examination to Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, who is also the University' Chancellor.
The AAP youth wing had also petitioned Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to make the same demand.
Earlier, Goa University had switched all examinations to the online mode except for the final year students.
The argument was that since final year students in professional courses were either being readied for the industry and job market besides some who would pursue masters degrees, it would be important that the exam is conducted in the physical form.
