Goans looking forward to visit Belagavi may have to wait for at least a two more weeks as Belagavi District Incharge Minister Govind Karjol has said the large number of Covid cases in Goa and Maharashtra has compelled authorities to consider extending the lockdown in Belagavi district beyond June 14.
He was speaking to media persons after a high level meeting in Belagavi on Wednesday. Regional Commissioner and Administrator to BIMS Amalan Aditya Biswas, Deputy Commissioner M G Hiremath and other senior officials were present.
“The number of Covid cases in Belagavi is still high. Moreover, Belagavi is bordering Goa and Maharashtra. While the number of active Covid positive cases in Goa is still high, Kolhapur district neighbouring Belagavi has a higher number of active cases. Hence, I have come to a conclusion that the lockdown in Belagavi should be continued for at least for two more weeks,” Karjol said.
“However, a final decision in this regard will be taken after a meeting with Chief Minister B S Yediyyurappa on Thursday, where the current situation in Belagavi district and the situation in Goa and Maharashtra would be discussed, Karjol added.
“I am of the opinion of extending the lockdown in Belagavi district only for the safety and well-being of people in the district,” he asserted.
Data released by the officials on Wednesday showed a huge decline of Covid cases in Belagavi and Karnataka.
Belagavi reported 341 positive cases while 1,097 persons were discharged. The number of active cases in Belagavi district remained at 8,100 cases, with 663 Covid deaths reported in the district.
On Wednesday, 10,959 positive cases were reported in Karnataka and 20,246 persons were discharged. The number of active cases in the state was 2,15,525 on Wednesday.
