Burglars struck the Shree Shantadurga Quittolkarin Temple at Quitol last night, decamping with gold chains, besides cash of Rs 25,000, all amounting to around Rs three lakh.

That the burglars came well planned to burgle the temple became evident when they lifted away the hard disk of the Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) cameras.

The culprits barged inside the temple by bending the window grills. After laying their hands on the two gold chains around the neck of the deity, the miscreants lifted away the donation box.

While cash of Rs 25,000 was believed to have been lifted away from the donation box, the coins were left behind. The donation box was found abandoned a few meters away from the temple.

The incident came to light on Monday morning when the temple priest had come to perform pooja. His worst fears came true when he found the window grills missing.

After raising an alert in the neighbourhood, the priest later brought the matter to the notice of the temple committee president Uday Naik Desai.

A complaint was lodged with the Cuncolim police station. The police sniffer dog, which was requisitioned to assist in the investigation, is believed to have not thrown much light into the incident.
