After striking in two different places in Ponda taluka, burglars stole an ATM containing cash of Rs 18.30 lakh and later abandoned the machine at an isolated spot in Agarwaddo-Pernem on Thursday night.
According to Pernem police, two burglars went to Parsem on a two wheeler where they first stole a rickshaw (GA-11-T-1448) and drove the vehicle to Agarwaddo. They later targeted an ATM along the main road, which did not have a security guard.
The burglars removed the ATM with help of an iron rod, loaded it in the rickshaw and drove to an isolated spot at the Bodkadhenu hill. The burglars then broke open the ATM and fled away with cash of Rs 18.30 lakh, leaving the ATM and rickshaw behind, Pernem police said.
The rickshaw owner was surprised to find his vehicle missing on Friday morning and while searching frantically for his rickshaw, happened to see a police team proceeding towards Agarwaddo.
He met them at the ATM premises in Agarwaddo and reported the theft of his
rickshaw sometime the previous night.
While he was in conversation with police, a local arrived at the site and claimed that the stolen rickshaw had been spotted at the Bodkadhenu hill. The police team then rushed to the site where they found his rickshaw abandoned on the main road and the stolen ATM some distance away from the rickshaw.
