Although Goa has increasingly experienced warm weather over the past few days, Director of the Met department in the state ML Sahu, while speaking to The Goan, said Goa’s temperatures were normal for the season. While Goa is currently witnessing higher temperatures, certain areas in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat and Maharashtra are already in the grip of heat wave.
“This sort of weather is normal in Goa for this time of the year. This is normal temperature, save for a few degrees departure from normal,” said Sahu.
On the issue of reports that Goa was in the grip of a heat wave, Sahu clarified that such a situation could not arise as the temperatures had not increased to that level.
“The conditions in the state for a heat wave to occur should be over 37 degrees Celsius and should have a departure of over 4.5 degree from minimum and maximum temperatures. Only if these two conditions happen would a heat wave occur in the state. None of these conditions are happening at the moment, so there is no need to worry of a heat wave,” said Sahu.
Summer, however, has arrived with high temperatures and higher humidity. The maximum temperatures changed a little but were within the normal range across the state. Minimum temperatures however showed a departure of three degrees from the normal, with the highest minimum temperature being recorded on Wednesday at 27.6 degree Celsius. The highest maximum temperature was recorded at 34 degree Celsius.
The Met department also registered light rain or thundershower at isolated places in the State on Thursday but predicts the weather to be mostly dry for the next four days.
The local forecast for the next 24 hours is that the weather will be partly cloudy with possibility of rain or thundershower. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 34 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius respectively.
On Wednesday the state registered a 33.8 degree Celsius maximum temperature with a departure of 1.3 degree Celsius from the normal and a minimum temperature of 27.6 degree Celsius, a departure of 3.3 degree Celsius from normal. Humidity was at a high of 82 percent.
