Govt confident of ST political reservation before 2027 polls

State continuously pursuing matter with Centre, says Sawant

PANAJI

Even as tribal organisations have announced a State-wide agitation over the delay in implementing political reservation for Scheduled Tribes (STs), the State government on Wednesday expressed confidence that the process would be completed before the 2027 Assembly elections.

CM Pramod Sawant said the State has once again taken up the matter with the Centre. “I am confident the notification will be out soon. We have already raised the issue again with the Centre. It will happen,” Sawant said while refusing to comment on the proposed protest call.

Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said both the CM and the BJP’s State leadership were continuously pursuing the matter with the Centre. “If the notification is issued by the end of August, the entire process can be completed within two months. There is no delimitation involved. The exercise will be based on the 2011 Census data,” Tawadkar said.

The assurance comes amid growing resentment among tribal groups, which have announced a State-wide protest from next month over the prolonged delay in implementing the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Act, 2024.
